Shuvuuia · approved identity correction
Status: approved and applied on 10 October 2026. Use only Shuvuuia (66043). Shuuvuia (307772) is held out as a duplicate spelling identity, not an independent guess or answer. Historical policy v9 checkpoint: the expanded review queue contained 1,314 genera; the live 36-genus sample is unchanged.
What the database says
| Identity | Spelling | Accepted identity | Parent | Linked occurrences | Original reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 66043 | Shuvuuia | 66043 | Parvicursorinae | 3 | Chiappe et al. 1998, reference 13618 |
| 307772 | Shuuvuia | 307772 | Mononykini | 0 | Chiappe et al. 1998, reference 13618 |
Both records remain self-accepted in the frozen roster and the fresh PBDB capture. The selected classification opinion for Shuvuuia is 939591 (Kubo et al. 2023), with spelling reason “correction”; for Shuuvuia it is 508053 (Agnolin et al. 2012), with spelling reason “original spelling”. Shuvuuia contains the child species Shuvuuia deserti (66044); the empty record has no child species. These flags describe entered data, not a separate nomenclatural ruling.
Why we use one genus
The original-description publisher uses Shuvuuia deserti. Suzuki et al. 2002 explicitly treats Shuvuuia deserti Chiappe et al. 1998 and identifies holotype MGI 100/975. Together with the shared original reference and spelling-correction opinions, this supports the inference that these are two spelling records for one described genus. The precise cause of the duplicate is not established by our capture.
The user approved using only Shuvuuia. This is a documented exception to our PBDB identity rule, not a claim that PBDB has repaired or formally synonymised its records. Both original records and captured responses are preserved. No search alias, occurrence transfer or ancestry transfer is introduced. The canonical record keeps its existing fossil evidence and source placement; working ancestry and hidden-answer eligibility still require separate reviews.
Effect on Baruungoyot
The comparison reconstructs the previous roster by restoring only record 307772, then reruns both candidate and probe sets with and without it. All other facts, qualified referrals, non-primary matches and missing locality evidence are preserved. It assumes all three provisional standard clues are known and uses the frozen source tree. Counts are unguessed candidates after actual wrong guesses reaching Parvicursorinae.
| Candidate answer | Before correction | After correction |
|---|---|---|
| Ceratonykus | 5–6 | 4–5 |
| Jaculinykus | 5–6 | 4–5 |
| Khulsanurus | 5–6 | 4–5 |
| Ondogurvel | 5–6 | 4–5 |
| Parvicursor | 5–6 | 4–5 |
Five recorded matches remain: Ceratonykus, Jaculinykus, Khulsanurus, Ondogurvel and Parvicursor. A wrong guess of one of these five leaves four; an outside guess such as Albinykus can leave all five. The duplicate unknown candidate disappears; the genuine five-genus overlap remains. Free help still requires five unguessed indistinguishable answers, with no informative tree probe or ordinary clue remaining. This source diagnostic does not approve live help triggers, exhaustive fossil ranges or hidden answers.
Evidence and reproducibility
The original proposal is preserved in the source audit as proposal-review.json. Fresh identity and opinion responses are retained as wire-hashed compressed JSON, including all returned opinions. This report can be regenerated with python review-shuvuuia.py. Chiappe, Norell & Clark 1998 · original description ↗ — The publisher identifies the described taxon as Shuvuuia deserti.
Suzuki et al. 2002 · systematic treatment ↗ — The systematic section uses Shuvuuia deserti Chiappe et al. 1998 and identifies holotype MGI 100/975, tying the name to the same described genus. Its locality statements concern listed specimens, not exhaustive absence from other formations.
